non interference ingine in a 00-06 montero sport?

non interference ingine in a 00-06 montero sport?
My montero sport has a 3.0 interference engine in it.Can Mitsubiti's
3.0 sohc 12 valve non interference engine be used instead ? Cause I like non interference engines since they arent known for trashing your engine when timing goes off.
Another issue could be passing kaliforicstan's tough smog emission parameters due to it not being the same as the original engine for it.
