Please help diagnose my audio problem
I have a new-to-me 1999 Montero Sport Limited with all-stock infinity sound. The driver's side 6" door speaker makes only a faint, muffled sound, while the driver' side 4" dash speaker (and all other speakers) works OK. I've done some diagnosis, but can't figure out what the problem is. I'd sure appreciate some help!
1. The problem is not with the speaker, since any known-good speaker does the same thing when plugged into the door connector. They all work, but very quiet and only low-end.
2. I did a couple tests of the wiring. First, I connected a good speaker using the + wire from the 3.5" dash speaker and the - wire from the faulty 6" connector, and the speaker worked fine. Then I connected a speaker using the - wire from the dash connector and the + wire from the door, and again the speaker worked fine. Both wires in the door seem to work with a partner from the 3.5" speaker connector, but they just don't work together. Weird, huh? I also measured 17 ohms across the wires from the door to the wires from the dash, so they are neither shorting nor broken. So, to this total amatuer, it doesn't seem to be a wiring problem.
3. Seems like the head unit must be OK, since all four channels (front & back, left & right) have at least one good working speaker (remember, the 3.5" speaker on the drivers side front works...only the door is bad). The head unit just provides a pre-out to the amp for each of the four channels, right?
4. So what about the amp? Could the amp be providing good signal to the 3.5" speaker, but bad signal to the 6" door speaker on the same channel? If so, what can I do about it? Can I replace the amp? How do I find an amp that will work with my stock infinity system? What would you do?
Thanks for your help!

Peter,
I worked troubleshooting on fighter jets for the past 20 years, and wiring things of that sort. From your diagnosis and your troubleshooting, it would only seem plausable that the problem you're having is (1) The amp having a bad connection going to your speaker, or (2) the wire itself may be damaged (from the amp to the speaker). Either way, it seems like a very inexpensive fix, but it will take some time to find your amp and which wires go where.
Good luck.

I have this exact problem in my 2000 XLS, my plan is to buy a new Amp when I have $80 to waste on one. I did everything you did moving speakers around to see if it was blown speaker, etc, its wire or amp like the other guy said.
i never replaced the amp like i had originally planned. just learned to live with it, and its not that loud anymore. i bought a much better Head Unit than the one i had, bought Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS , and it diminished the whine about 70%, pretty good. replaced the dash speakers with alpines, and am currently in the process of installing a subwoofer, did all the wiring myself under the carpet and such. only need to finish installing the power wire from the battery and my Dual BP1204 12-Inch 1100-Watt Illumination Bandpass Subwoofer will be good to go. If any of you have any questions for me my number is 727 364 3344, ill text back. I know how difficult it can be to find information, if any, on this oh so popular suv.
please help me...I Have not got owners manual...I can't go to the dealer...I live in republic of Georgia..and I bought this car from USA...only i have this information..and if it posible I want to find radio CODE...I need radio code...to unlock it... radio serial nomber is: 99D65061 radio model:MR490090 my car vin code is: JA4MW51R21J033971
You could also just buy a new radio. That is what I did. I have 2 codes written in my owners manual u can try, but I believe once u try 3 times it locks you out? I am on vacation with family and don't have access to my car until jan 8. Try everything else and if u still need those 2 codes from me to try I can give it to u then. (I THINK it is possible to bypass the 3 codes max if u unplug the radio, so it has no power...May reset? Give u 3 chances again, etc. [just a thought tho])
What brand is the radio? I can get the right code for you with the other info you already supplied.
I tried for you but to no avail.
Mitsubishi codes will only be available from the Main Dealer database or the unit will have to be taken into a Radio Decoding Service to obtain this code
Not available for free or cheap from anywhere on the Internet.
