replace subwoofer in montero?
got an '02 montero with the infinity system, and looking at replacing just the sub. the foam surround is complete trash and it sounds horrible. if anyone has replaced it with a sub mounting it in the same stock location what did you use and how does it sound?

Let me tell you from experience.
Getting to the stock sub a lone is tedious work.
Putting everything back might be even worse--making sure all the clips are there and aligned properly so there is no rattling.
The stock sub is not 6-6.5", it is more like 8" and it should be easy to build a custom mount if not ghetto-fab one to hold the new sub in place. But the work you will see you will put in just to replace it, and if you are not even bothering to upgrade anything else in the system (amp, deck, etC), you will feel like it was wasted effort.
If you are going to replace it with a better sub, I highly recommend getting a better amp to power it, BECAUSE, the stock amp crossover frequencies to the stock sub is not what people think. I have tested it. I can reassure you, the stock sub was not filtered at 80hz. I did some test sending only 80hz and below to t stock sub and it could not handle it at all. It looks like it was doing more like mid bass of 100-200hz tops. So if you get an aftermarket sub in there and using the stock amp, your results may not be to your liking.
