Rotor Hub Separation Montero 1995 3.5L
Rotor Hub Separation
Hello fellow Montero enthusiasts. I just bought a 95 SR with the common pulse in the brakes. I’ve decided to have the rotors turned, but I can’t get them separated from the hub. I’ve loosened the 6 bolts that hold the two together, but no luck. The shop says they can turn them because of the amount left of the rotor, but can’t fit the tool around the ABS gear.
Any advice or tips? Thank you kindly in advance, Eric

You'll need to remove the entire hub assembly WITH THE ROTORS ATTATCHED and have them resurfaced as one unit using lathe adapters that fit inside of the hubs wheel bearing race. Do NOT seperate the rotors from the hub unless you intend to replace them. On another note- if your pedal pulsates while braking yet your steering wheel does NOT shimmy, look to your rear rotors as the culprit. The rear rotors are MORE likely to cause the brake pedal pulsation on the Montero's than the fronts (go figure?). If you have a shimmy- go ahead and resurface the fronts, though you still may need to resurface the rears anyway if your pulsation persists. Good LUck!

Thanks Joel! I'll find another shop with more available equipment to turn the rotors. I'm also doing the rear rotors but that is cakewalk. So how would I get the front rotors off if I did need to replace them. This is for sure the last time they can be turned because of how slim they are now. It looks to me like they've been hydrallically pressed together.
Thanks to all who have posted such great info as to how get to the hub/rotor assembly. You have all made this job a breeze. I've also taken advice as to replace pads made with ceramic.

ONce you unbolt the rotor from the hub- you'll need to use some "convincing" power (aka hammer) to seperate them. They can sometimes get stuck together due to age. Be careful not to damage the hub/wheel studs during this convincing process.
