Transfer case?

Transfer case?
Ok..Here is a big one..I tackled the tune up situtaion and timing belt situation ok on my 2001 monty sport es (3.0,4x4).Took it to get safety inspected today, and the guy told me I have alot of play in the shaft that goes into my Transfer case??.You can turn it about 1/2 both directions before the wheels move.Is this something a basic do-it-yourselfer can tackle? Anyone messed with an issue like this before? He told me the gears should be fine, and it should only bea bearing replacement issue, and will run me around 5-600 bucks.I absolutely hate paying someone to do work that I can do for half the amount. Hope this post makes sense. Thanks in advance!

RE: Transfer case?
First, you need to be a LOT more specific as to what is moving and why its not "suppost" to move.
second, if hes referring to the front propshaft, hes basically an idiot. Its not connected unless in 4WD, and will freewheel.
nothing ever fails on the montero or montero sports transfer cases or axles except for an occasional indicator switch.
I can guarantee your sport is fine.

RE: Transfer case?
The shaft in the pic.He sais something about worn out pinion bearings or something.I don't know anything about 4x4.I can turn it about 3/4 of an inch in each direction before the front wheels begin to turn. When I put it in 4 wheel drive and give it fuel, there is a popping noise.I don't know if it is a half shaft or what. The seal is leaking there on the diff case. I don't know..I am going to take it to another mechanic and see what they say.. Thanks for the reply!
