Default Transfer shifter

The transfer shift lever on my '00 Pajero is loose and wobbly (when engaged in any position). It wobbles to both sides, much like when the bushings are in need of replacement on the automatic transmission shifter. It also doesn't seem to follow the pattern on the lever either, and when I somehow manage to get it in 4H, it doesn't stay engaged. I was told the shift ball needs replacement (part number: MD701605). Is this a common issue?
