Question upgrading sound system on my 2002 Montero

Hi
wanting to upgrade the sound system that came with my 2002 Montero (and maybe my sister 2005) for something a little more up to date, ipod/iphone connection, maybe bluetooth and was wondering who here have made that changes and what radio they choose.
At the dealer they keep wanting to make all changes to everything and I would rather hear first from someone with experience on it.
Thanks!

If you have a local independant car audio shop, take it to them and have them give you an estimate.
Avoid the chain stores and dealerships.
anything and everything is possible now days.. I was an installer from mid 80's to early 2000's. A lot has changed since then.
Check out Crutchfield for component possibilites, print out what you find and take it to a local shop.
They'll help you out in any way they can.

hope that helps!

edit: I recently acquired a 2002 Montero Sport and will install something into it.
I have a few components from the old days i'm going to use.
You can go from simple to crazy.. all depends on your pocketbook!!

Default My Montero sound system

I put in a Jensen VM9414 and new Polk speakers for the 4 doors. Crutchfiled is more $$ but the adapters for the speakers and stereo all fit OK, so nice to one stop shop. Note that there is a special MITAH harness adapter required.

Had to disable the crappy broken sub. You need to know if yours is an Infinity system or not.

Hard to find a small sub that fit to replace the old, so I skipped for now. Also hard to find a reasonably sized replacement amp. Cerwin Vega make a 'Stealth' amp that fits, but my budget wasn't including sub+amp.

The tweeters are also hard to replace, they seem to have a custom mount, I left those in place as well.

The Jensen I bought is OK, cheap. Don't get the Nav option, it's pretty crappy UI (in fact the main stereo UI isn't so great either, i.e. cheap chinese programmers...) I can answer details on installation if you are talking about full size Montero, the forum guys can help with sport.

If you are looking for a DVD or touch screen stereo, be aware that the stereo will stick out from the dash a couple inches to make room for the swing up display. Check out the thread below and be sure to get the MITAH harness adapter.

I have a 2002 Montero Limited. When I bought it last year, the sub rattled/buzzed as it was blown out. I bought an 8in Kicker sub (I believe that was the size...its been awhile) to replace the factory sub (which happens to be made out of paper). The speaker cost around $90 and the swap took about an hour and a half. The factory system pushes the sub very nicely.

During the install, I did have to drill my own holes as the factory holes did not match up with subs' holes. Also, the magnet/driver on the sub comes VERY close to the inside of the body. It will definitely stick as you're trying to install it, but once installed there is about a 1/4in to 3/8in gap. Most of the job is removing plastic panels and I believe a seatbelt mount. I remember my arms getting pretty scraped up from maneuvering around. Good luck!

Did it fit inside the panel like the stocker??? That would be awesome, because mine is no good as well.

It fits perfectly aside from the hole placement.

Do you have any pics?? I've started pulling the panel but I'm not sure what's holding it on. I've got nothing but time so any tips are appreciated. Thanks

I wish I had posted information right as I did this project, but it was over a year ago now. If I'm remembering correctly, the panel is attached with your typical interior fasteners, plastic clips/retainers. It would help to have the right tool to remove these so as to not break them off (however, I used a flathead screwdriver). I do think you have to remove a seat belt mount for the back seat.

I won't waste your time...I'll look at the car tonight to refresh my memory so I can give you more informed advice. I'll also get you the model number of the sub.

I am interested in this mod as well, because the 2001 model I bought a couple of years ago has the same buzzing/rattling sub.
I am concerned about the fix, though, because I read another post somewhere that said that the reason these things are blown so often is water intrusion through the rear side pop-out window into the body panel where the sub is located. So I don't know that any fix in that location would last very long. Sub may need to be relocated to be a permanent fix. Anyone else heard about this?
