Mitsubishi Montero & Montero SportThis sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.
I am starting this thread in an attempt to locate the best Code Readers that will work on Mitsubishi models. I own several 1994 Mitsubishi Monteros and have been having a terrible time locating a Code Reader that works. Apparently all vehicles went from OBD 1 to OBD 2 in 1995. Thus, I have been unsuccessfully trying to find a Code Reader that will work on the OBD 1 codes of Mitsubishi.
I thought I found the perfect one and purchased it......an Innova 3140G, pictured below: It is called an "OBD 1 & 2 Scan Tool", so you would assume that it covers all OBD 1 vehicles, or that Innova would list someplace all the OBD 1 vehicles that it covers.....but even in their lenghty manual they do not list the covered vehicles. This is very poor marketing by Innova, which is clearly deceptive advertising and worthy of an FTC class-action lawsuit. Clearly, I am not happy and would be the first complainant to sign up to this lawsuit.
So, hopefully this thread will get input from others as to some of the best Code Readers on the market, those that service the OBD 1 and OBD 2 Mitsubishi vehicles.
I take it you inadvertently confirmed that your Montero is OBD I. So sorry to hear that the new reader doesn't work. Look into pulling error codes from OBD 1 via shorting the pins on connector. I had to do it on my old Pontiac and it worked.
Yep, I will have to figure out how to do that, and count the number of flashes and match the number to a chart someplace.......I guess its all in the shop manual.
Hunter.......those 3 websites are perfect. Excellent information on how to get the codes without an expensive Code Reader. Really looks pretty simple to do. Will give it a try as soon as I have time. Im sure this information will help alot of other people in the future.....great input!
Australia was stuck on OBD1 until 2006, so you may find their discussions about scanners for old Mitsubishis relevant eg. (15) Scan tools | Page 2 | Mitsubishi Forums. I know I use a Foxwell NT530 to good effect on my Mum's '98 KF Verada (Diamante), which is on OBD1...
Kimp......Thanks mate. Boy, the Aussies were a few years behind in upgrading the OBD1 to 2. With my '94 Monty, guess I just have to keep the abacus out and slide those beads accordingly, and maybe draw straws for good measure. Then again, maybe I have a darn Witche's hex on my Monty, and that will never go away.
However, I am sure glad to own a 90s Monty over any of these overly-complicated "high-tech", computerized space ships that are being sold today at astronomical prices today.
Hope I'm not too late answering this, but you will require a MUT-II diagnostic scanner to pull codes. They are expensive but you may get lucky and find a good deal somewhere.
