I need to have both replaced on 03 xls with 160k on it , shop quoted me around $500 to do both , I can't do it my self or I would . Does this sound reasonable ??

 

five hundy, that sounds damned cheap, for a mechanic!

I'd say that sounds about right. Looking at axles for my generation, they can be bought for about $100 each. Figure a few hours labor and their upcharge on the parts. $500 is about right.

I'd be asking about warranty length. I don't work for them, I just like their policies...look at a NAPA shop to do the work. Nationwide 2yr labor warranty...last time I had them do stuff for me.
