RE: 15,000 mile Worth it?
my outlander just had 15000 miles @ a local dealership with their on-line coupon for $60.00.based on the maintenance sheet, they only perform air filter replacement and check up.

The only thing that you might not be able to do yourself is to disassemble the brake calipers to grease the slides. The thing though is that most dealers also "forget" to do this. Greasing the slidesallows the pistons tomove freely and will prolong the life of your brake pads and disks by allowing the pads to retreat back to neutral after braking and won't jam against the disks. As you can see, the dealer has no interest in prolonging the life of these profitable repairsthat are not under waranty [8D]. Some dealers are better than others though and might actually do this for you but since I can do it myself I save the 300$. I actually like to do "caliper maintenance" twice a year and is more important on the rear because they tend to jam more often. Don't forget, if you do do it yourself, to use a special grease that won't degrade the rubber seals and don't get any grease on the pads or disks. Actually, use grease that is specially formulated for this cause it also has to withstand high heat. I beleive it is a copper based grease (I'm not sure because I use the stuff my mechanic Father in law uses). I know the grease is espensive but a tube will last a long time. Am i making any sense?

The dealership I purchased my outtie at has a brochure showing the prices and services performed at the various maintenance intervals. This brochure is generic for all mitsubishi cars, and not specific to the outtie. The cost of the 15,000 mile check is $157 and here's whats included;
Lubricate and inspect suspension, driveline, steering, hinges, cable guides and contact points
Inspect drive belts, hoses, cables, lights, horn, filters, tires and fluid levels
Change oil and oil filter
Inspect disc brake pads & rotors for wear
Rotate and inspect tires and check air pressure
Replace air cleaner element
Check automatic Transaxle/Transmission fluid
Inspect rear drum brake linings & rear wheel cylinders for wear and leaks
Check brake hoses for leaks and deterioration
Inspect drive shaft boots for grease leaks and damage
27 point safety inspection
As you can see there is a lot ofinspections in this service, but the onlywork actually done is the oil change, rotation of tires,replacing the air cleaner, and lubricating items.

The replacing of the air filter is the engine air filter, not the cabin air filter that keeps the air insidethe car clean. The cabin air filter is a separate item at $63.
I understand the importance of all the inspecting and checking being done at 15,000 mile intervals.If they can catch something that keeps you from breaking down on the road its probably worth it. Also, by spotting a problemwhen itssmall and correcting it, that can save you, or mitsu in the case of a warranty repair, from a much larger repair bill. An example of that mightbe replacing CV boots beforedamage is done to the CV joints.Still $157 is a lot of money.
