Default 2006 Transmission Repair or Replace

Hello
first some history
2006 Outlander 3rd owner(2nd in country)
a while back i was going downhill and my son moved the gear lever from D to R i continued downhil and my dash lit up like a christmas tree and the car went limp so disconnected the battery for the night and in the morning gunned it in 4wd and this "fixed" the limp issue.

Current issue
i got to the scheduled trans maintenance(+ fixing some seals) when we drained the oil it had some metal chips not so big but not the fine dust. When we were done the car woke up in limp mode the reverse gear requires alot of torque the front low gears are so weak.

Anyone with any experience of such please advice what i need to check/fix or is my only option as my mech told me is a new Gearbox.
any good advice is welcome.
NB: i reapplied the previous "solution" and front seems okayish but reverse is still weak

no warning on dash or from transmission
