Default 2009 Outlander ES AWD Payload Capacity

Hey Guys,

Just a quick question, does anyone know what is the maximum standard payload of a 2009 Outlander ES AWD (2.4l engine)? I have browsed around the net and I get various results, from 1100lbs all the way up to 1500lbs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you mean towing capacity then the manual says 1500kg braked trailer and 750kg without brakes .That's assuming you have the correct tow bar fitted. Max towball weight 150kg. GCM (vehicle and trailer combined) is 3620kg gross vehicle mass is 2270kg.
I tow a 1400kg caravan with my 2009 2.4 cvt on duel fuel without any problems at all. 1kg +2.2 lbs.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply but I am more interested in payload capacity as in total weight of passengers + cargo, I just read on the sticker (when you open front driver side door) that its 827 lbs, which I don't think its a lot :S Basically 5 200lbs people, according to the specs, are too much.

I own an 08 ES and yes, the vehicle capacity weight is 827 pounds. It's listed on both the sticker and in the owner's manual.

while it may be the rated capacity, manufacturers go light on the numbers just to be safe.

My ranger is rated for 1200 lbs...i've sat her on the axles with 2000 lbs and didn't break. I also many 1800lbs loads with an inch or so of suspension travel. Just gotta be a bit more careful of what you do.

I've had over 1200lbs of people and cargo in my Outie. No Problem at all.

None of my friends are fat so I have no weight problems. One of my sons is 6ft 8in high and he has plenty of room in the back seat. with him and two of his mates of similar height we still had no weight problems. Their total weight wasn't that much more than their luggage.

I suspect the 827 pound limit on ES/LS models is partly because of the CVT. From everything I've read about CVT's they are still fairly limited in the weight and horsepower they can handle.

I wouldn't worry about the CVT as I tow a van that weighs 3000lbs without any problem at all. Mitsubishi says I can go even higher and it doesn't affect the warranty. I have the genuine hitch fitted by Mitsubishi.
As for the payload the book says CVT auto 5 seats 690kg or 1500lbs which includes occupants, fuel and fitted options. That's the official word from the Outlander 2009 brochure . That is in Australia. Maybe they send the tougher ones here. Just load it up but you may need airbags to stop it from sagging.

So... I had some time today to actually open the owners manual and it is rather interesting that 5 seat 2.4l models have a payload capacity of 827lbs, 5 seat 3.0l have around 930lbs, and 7 seat 2.4/3.0l models have exact same capacity of around 1150lbs. So now the questions is, whats the difference in suspension setup between 5 and 7 seat models? Do all Outlanders use the exact same suspension components? It doesn't look like transmission is the problem. Can anyone verify this?
