Default 2010 Outlander expansion valve replacement

Hi all-

Short version - can the AC expansion valve be removed from the engine bay or without removing the dash on a v6 2010 Outlander? If so, any tips or insight?

Long version - I’ve been having fun with AC problems this summer. I replaced a failed coil and clutch 2 weeks ago and temporarily fixed the problem but now I’m fairly sure the compressor is dying. I was low on refrigerant this past weekend and was only able to charge the system with the engine at 2k rpm. It barely moved the needle at idle. I’m surmising this was due to a weak compressor. My ac still works half decently, but only at 2k rpm or higher. Also, the compressor is getting louder.

So, assuming the compressor is shot, the plan is to replace the compressor, condenser, receiver/dryer, and expansion valve.

For anyone who may care, the expansion valve can indeed be replaced from the engine bay. There is a thin metal shield held on by one bolt that can be bent back. The two AC lines that go into expansion valve are held in by a plate that is secured with single bolt. After removing the plate, take out 2 Allen bolts and the expansion valve comes out with a bit of wiggling. Also, I could barely bit my arm between the strut brace and the top of the firewall so if you have massive arms, you may run into trouble. Think twice before removing the strut brace as those bolts are known to break -- you may end up replacing the struts or repairing broken welds if you go that route.
