This is my first post on this forum and I just bought a new Outlander 2.4 MIVEC Euro Spec as I have recently moved to Russia.

The Russian brochure states that my car has AWC, while the sport version of the 3.0 Engine has S-AWC.

I was just wondering, does my car have a centre differential or not? I have read somewhere that it has electronicly controlled clutch at the centre but I don't understand how can the car vary the torque between the front and rear axles without having a differential in the centre?

Your explanation would be really appreciated.

 

There is no centre differential.

The front wheels and tail shaft are driven all the time. On the front of the rear differential is an electronically controlled clutch pack.

 

There's no center differential. Electronically controlled coupling is used to transfer torque to rear axle.

It is designed to work with partial slippage so actual differential gears are not needed.

On S-AWC versions there's also front ELSD, electronically-controlled limited slip differential.
