Accuracy of Fuel Mileage Meter

2011 sport
I know there is a huge thread on "Bad gas Mileage"
but I've now experienced twice what I wrote below
Recent: 300 mile round trip there and back same road (I-80) NYC to PA. same weather conditions (heavy north winds, heavy enough to make you change lanes)
On the way there.. couldn't get this thing to break 21.9 MPG
On the way back avged. a new high of 26.6 MPG ??????? WTF
Last trip: 80 mile round trip.. same road and conditions there and back
25 on the way there
22 on the way back
So this is twice, now I'm really questioning this meter's accuracy
I know the manual way of figuring out true MPG is the more accurate
and these meters are pretty much guesstimates but there is a big enough gap that I really have no faith in it,,, but I'm so fixated on it

Mine has always been 1mpg low. As much as 1.8mpg low.
If it says 23.5 on the guage it always works out to 25 or so.
Keep in mind you have a 2 liter engine. At high speed with an incline it doesnt take much to cause the engine to work harder.
If we had V8's we would be talking changes of 1-2 mpg in these conditions.
inline 4's vary greatly.
That being said, after the ECU reflash and 9k miles my MPGs have come up greatly.
In town I make it a point to drive efficiently and its putting money back in my pocket for the times that I want to kick it in to 4 wheel lock and eat back roads!
Enjoy it.
Trust me when I say that equivalent vehicles suffer the same issues.
I spent a week in a Hyundai that was supposed to get 31mpg and the best I ever saw was 24 hwy and 17 in town.

There are a number of things to consider when it comes to milage, wind being one of them.
Road conditions, temperature, tire preasure, traffic, mechanical changes (cold start, air filter condition, plug condition, etc), cruise control or manual throttle, can all impact milage.
I've been doing a fair bit of testing on my 100mile (160km) round trip commute with my 08 Caliber SRT4. Five days a week, same time of day, similar driving/weather conditions, and I've seen my milage go up or down half a liter per hundred km.
My average going to work with this car is ~8.2L Per 100km
My average going home from work with this car is ~7.5L Per 100km.
Not bad for ~300hp at the wheels.
Anyway, that was off topic. The point is, there are a lot of conditions that can effect milage. Even something like doing a couple short drives before a hwy test run can drop your milage.
