I haven't replaced my filter yet because my car is still relatively new. Out of curiosity, what don't you like about the stock airbox?

You havea 2016, so i'm not sure if it's the same as my 2009 design. But the airbox doesn't lock into place as tightly and surefooted as i would like. The design is not very good, and my childhood friend is the lead mechanic at the local mitsubishi dealership. He said, anytime an engine isn't running right, it's the first thing he checks, is to make sure the air filter box was put back together correctly and tightly.

You have made me curious (and concerned). Please post a pic of your airbox if not too much trouble. I'd like to compare the design to mine.

Looking at pictures on the internet, your engine bay looks similar. But the airbox looks slightly different with some plastic redesigns. So maybe your's is better, you have to replace your filter to see if the thing is sturdy and robust.

Thanks for checking! I guess I should've thought to just look at pictures online too. I will give it a look when the time comes, still a ways off.

Unless you are adding a combination of items that work with the air filter, I can't see anything noticeable by just changing the factory filter. The factory diaper works plenty well, the motor just can't process and "free'r" air flow than the stock fuel and ignition system can manage.
I've got the pulley and timing controller from RRM, and I don't think adding a filter will open up anymore power than it's already getting with a clean filter. (but I could be wrong)
With the engine management system Mitsubishi uses, adding more air (stock motor) is going to be a mute point since the computer will only process it to make the designed power it's supposed to.
