I got the Allen Deluxe snap-on bike carrier from Dick's Sporting Goods. It's quick attach and quick remove, no further modifications to the vehicle. Will work on cars and SUVs. It's not the slickest design, but does the job.

Fold up the seats and take off your front wheel and throw them in the back you have a SUV.

Amen! Just get a cargomat if you don't like the dirt. I always had racks, but like the quieter ride and better mileage of not having one - that's why I got this car instead of another sedan.

I was going to mount some cheap fork mount's on a board that I could lay across the floor towards the rear hatch. Then you roll the bike in backwards and clamp the front down to that board to keep it stable.
(search for 'traps bike mount' at www.nashbar.com)
