Hey all,
I am just curious....What is the tolerance in diameter difference the outlander can take if one tire of one size is, for example, on the driver rear and a different tire is on the passenger rear?
I am only asking since I need to get one of my tires replaced (defect), so it will be brand new, whereas the other 3 are not brand new, and have about 20,000km on it.
Basically, do I have anything to worry about if a new tire is on the car when the other 3 aren't new? I don't suspect it being an issue, but better safe than sorry.....

I was told by Kal tire and costco that because its an AWD they would not replace 1 tire if there was 60% or less tread left on the reset. They would have to replace all 4. This stemmed from a nail in the corner of the tire between the crown and sidewall. They said if they could not patch it, I would need 4 new tires. Lucky they did plug it.
I'm in a bit of a weird spot..and could use some advice:
Got 4 new all seasons (Toyos) around 20000km ago. Upon installation and balanced, felt vibration. So I took it back and they road forced them. Took it for a test drive, less vibration, but I still wasn't 100% happy. They said they are within specs on the balancer and that there wasn't anything more they could do since it was balanced on the road force balancer.
Fast forward to now, and I can physically see the wobble in the tire - the rim seems ok. I took it in to show them - the tire is balanced fine and the rim is true (is aw them check it). They rotated it on the rim, and redid it - still balanced. They agreed the tire is messed up (BUT SAY IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE), and will get me a new tire.
PROBLEM - after called Mitsu, I can';t put a tire on that will cause more than a 3/32" difference with the exisiting tire - which a new tire would do. So, now what do I do? CAn I argure this abnormality should have been spotted and they should cover the cost of replacing all 4 (Since it is AWD/4wd car)?
Can anyone chip in and tell me if it is a safety issue? I haven't had any trouble in the 20000km, but it is very unsetttling being able to see your tire shake......

I agree with you, it should have been caught upon the 2nd balancing. Belt is shifted. They will replace the bad tire, which is good. I doubt that you would be able to get the other 3 replaced n/c, but maybe you can find a happy medium.
First make sure of the diameter difference, then see if you can get something with Mitsu letterhead stating the specification for different diameter tires.

so I guess my concern is whether or not this is a safety issue. The mechanic says no, and I haven't had trouble with it (other than a little vibration in the car, but maybe the tire isn't causing that - hard to say).

Check the tread depths on the new and existing tires.
If there is vertually no difference, there should be no problems down the road.
Try to find a middle ground on the cost of 3 new tires if you are that concerned. Maybe the dealer will give you a price break due to the earlier complaints.

Hmmm..I read about that - does that damage the tire in anyway or make it uneven? Problem is I am pretty sure no one here does that (I am rural)
