Engine Break-In
Honestly today, you can't really be gentle during your break in period. If you drive with the flow of traffic and don't do too many 'jack rabbit' starts, you'll be fine. They make these engines to last longer than they did 10 years ago - I bet this class engine is rated to go atleast 150,000 before major engine failure. It's the preventivemaintenance that's going to save your engine....
The guy that wrote that article is an idot. He recommends draining the original oil and replacing with a non-synthetic for break in. The problem with that is that most manufactuers have additives in the original oil to aid break in. Draining the oil with the break in additives and replacing it with fresh oil with none is not the best way to go.
Second - that site is clearly motorcycle specific. The engines in motorcycles and cars are very different animals for the most part.
Also notice, his piston picture is one out of several. He choose the only one that actually had any deposits on it. That could have been a manufacturing anomoly. He has abusolutely no statistical data to support his claims.

In order for that to be purposful information you need to of had them both till they broke.

Okay, did you fail to notice where he said this applies to all 4 stroke engines?
Do you have ANY data to prove this method bull****?
I personally have done this and gotten higher compression numbersthan following the manufacturers break in proceedure to the letter. Not to mention every other person i have informed about it, has come back to me with great results.
If you have nothing factual to support what your saying, then please shut up.

Ah, I see, I need to provide data to disprove a theory that has no data to prove itself accurate to begin with.
So you took two identical engines and broke them in using two different methods eliminating all other variables and came up different results? If, so, then you have a start. That is two data points. Still not a proper data sample to make conclusions from.
So since I do not agree with you, I have to "shut up". Great response. [sm=smiley32.gif]
I am sure you will have some witty retort to this post. Go ahead and impress everyone here with your ability to berate me. I will not continue to argue with you, as that would only show that I am childish and petty.
I bought my outi with 50+ miles on it from test drives, I suppose. It was the only black LS 4WD on the lot, so I couldn't really be too picky. After reading through this post, I dunno if I should worry that I passed the opportunity to "properlly" breack in my motor or step back for a second and realize what we are driving, anSUV made for utillity and confort, not exactly a racer.I don't think this subject is worth the head ache some of you areprobablygetting over it, bottom line is that we may never sign up our outties for a drag race, and if you are worried about reliabillity, think again, would mitsu guarantee 10 years100,000 miles onyour engine if it was nessesary to "properlly" breack in the engine?Probably not, I'm sure theyknow that a lot of consumers will buy the car and driveoff the lot without any worries on how to breack in the motor.
Mine had 100 miles on it. And anyone that has tried the manual shifting knows they have near redlined the engine at least once during break in. I figure during test drives it probably was stomped on a few times.
If I was worried about I wouldnt have bought it. Todays engines are built to better specs than they used to I gentle break in isnt as critical as it used to be.
And yes the 100,000 warranty made me feel better. My trucks break in was too gentle and the rings started to get blowby on decel before 100K I figure bad rings will show up sooner.
The most important thing is to check the oil, change it regularly and keep it full. Also keep an eye on the coolant. Ive seen more engines die early due to those reasons than hard break in.
