Headlight range control service
Hi, new here. I have a 2008 Outlander XLS and I have a service light on with below image. I looked it up and its for "headlight range control" both my headlights are working fine and if I shut the car off and turn it back on the service light goes away until I either stop to fast or turn a corner to fast, im pretty sure there is supposed to be a sensor/gyro or something on the rear pumpkin that controls light direction so maybe that is going bad? anyway this service light comes on even with the headlight off during the day time. I really cant afford to take it in to a dealer to diagnose my problem as I do 99% of the work myself anyway. So I was wondering if there was a common problem that would give me this service warning or a way to diagnose this myself. Thanks for all the help in advance.
That could be for the auto-leveling system... I am not aware of any other type of headlight control system in the Outlander...
Do you have the manual leveling dial on the lower driver door side control area (where the disable TCS button is)?

I don't know the 08 models that well but if it's got the HID lights and no manual leveling switch I'd say it's got the auto leveling system.
It's possible the sensor has gone or there is a problem with the leveling servos or something.. I know someone else was posting here about this before and they brought it to the dealer and I don't think it was ever fixed.
You can look around the headlights for harnesses, it's possible something is loose there... I am not sure where the sensor is located.

so I looked up the wiring diagram and ran 12 volts to the servos on the back of the headlights and both were moving fine, I searched the web for the location of a position sensor and havnt found anything yet, can anyone else chime in on the whereabouts of some sort of a sensor?
I also couldn't find the location of the sensor...
If you don't get an answer here you can call a dealer and ask, they will probably tell you.
You might want to unplug inspect and reconnect those servo connectors.. occasionally they just aren't making good contact or are corroded, though that is a pretty long shot.

Is it possible the BCM is just comparing the two rear pitch/yaw sensors against the same sensors mounted in the center console and under the dash?
(I find those things everywhere and unplugging them with the B+ connected sets about a dozen codes)
