Unhappy help with check engine code P0421/P0431

Hi I have a 2007 outlander xls with codes P0421 and P0431 coming up!! Has anyone had this yet and if so what did you come up with?? From what I see it is a catalyst warm up code.....I'm not sure if it could be the oxygen sensors or if it is definitely bad cats.....I know there is one cat attached to each manifold......just trying to find out if anyone has had this happen yet and what they did and if it fix the code......any help will be appreciated................Thanks Dan

Hi Dan,

I do not have an answer, but am writing to ask if you ever resolved your issue? I have a 2007 6-cyl Outlander LS and have the same P0431 code occasionally. I am contemplating replacing the exhaust system on my own, but am not sure if its something less drastic.

Please let me know if you ever found any additional information.

Thanks,

Emery

Bump

I'm getting these same codes on my 07 Outlander. How did you guys take care of them? New cats or just O2 sensors?

I haven't dealt with it yet. Been running with the engine light for a long time now. The entire exhaust line is rusted, so I plan on replacing the whole thing in the next couple of months, since I have emissions inspection due in October. I've been under the car and had to remove failed exhaust parts that were broken and rattling. The car still runs fine, but is starting to show its age (184K).

Ok... mine has 149k and the light doesn't bother me but its the wife's so she wants the light gone lol. I priced both on eBay for about $450, might have it replaced next year during tax season lol.

Tale of caution. I went down an expensive rabbit hole and warn you not to do the same. I have had the P0431 for a period of time now and wanted to get it resolve because my emissions test is due. Because I am very mechanical, I thought I'd take this on. After much confusion about which bank equates to left/right, I purchased the O2 sensor for the CAT that sits near the firewall. It was original and welded in, so in taking it out, I destroyed the threads in the CAT. I tried a thread chaser, but no go. So I then ordered the MagnaFlow manifold/CAT and new sensors. I take it to a mechanic, who installs everything (now up to about $1400 spent).

Pick up the car and the next day the code is back, check engine light on again. The mechanic contacts the manufacturer and discovers that we were working on the wrong CAT. This code references the CAT near the radiator. So now, I am at the dilemma point. I can solve the issue by purchasing another CAT ($600 including labor) or cut my losses and purchase a new car.

If I had taken it to the dealer this would have costs me about $1700. If I had not made the mistake of choosing the incorrect CAT, the repair would have been $600. This has been an awful experience for me that has me seriously looking at the 2017 models. I don't know if I can justify spending $2000 on this vehicle with close to 200K miles.

Sorry to hear that, it really sucks. I might just ride it out because the 2 cats I saw on eBay jumped from $400+ to $500. Still trying to figure out if it's worth it to have it fixed.

Yeah I know your dilemma. So as a follow-up, When I took the vehicle back to the garage, they said they had one more thing to try. They may have put the wrong sensor in. So, they exchanged the sensors and I have been checking with the ODB scanner every time I start the vehicle and thus far, no codes. One thing this entire situation has made me do is reassess the landscape for new vehicles. I took a look at the new Outlander, Mazda CX5, Kia Sorrento and others. I am impressed enough with the advancements that have been made since I purchased my 2007 Outie, that I am very seriously thinking of purchasing a new vehicle.

I have an LS with the moonroof and the Rockford Fosgate audio, but I could really use the comfort of the leather and other amenities in the new vehicles, as well as the quieter interiors and stiffer rides. I am even contemplating one of the luxury CUV's.

Even if I got my current vehicle back to factory mint condition, it is still old enough that I expect to be putting out more money in the near future. If I go with the 2016/17 Outlander, I'll let the thread know.

Cheers!

I took a look at the 16 outlander for the wife and she loved it. I think the cabin is a little smaller than her 07 xls (less head room) but the 3rd row is 100x better and the interior is pretty nice (leather option). I didn't test drive it however the only gripe I have is that the engine and powertrain is exactly the same as what's in the 07 xls (might have the higher compression engine like the '10 but essentially the same engine).

I just think Mitsubishi should have a more efficient and powerful engine after almost 10 years but I understand that they are not as established in the US and R&D budgets maybe low. In the lower trims I just believe a cvt and 2.4L isn't what I would want in a suv. When we get rid of the 07 we might go for a '16 or '17 best value for the money and looks are better than the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento IMO, and that would be the 4th Mitsubishi we've owned.
