First I have a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer.

I current have this style of remote to give you a visual.

https://www.remotesremotes.com/Produ...FZ26wAodeAUFpw

It's the 3 button light standard key (metal key that insert in car)

Same issue that you guys had. Key worked. Buttons light up but don't unlock/lock car when I press them.

As I said I was able to get this to work on 1 key ( I've misplaced 2nd key)

The directions a user posted straight from the manual I followed on this tread. Nothing different however the directions are a little confusing. As long as the keyword lights up when you press the button this should work.

Step 1: Press and hold the unlock button for 6 seconds.
Step 2: With other hand press and hold the lock button for 5 seconds.
Step 3: Release in order from start. Release finger unlock then immediately after release finger from lock.

(These first 3 steps open the programming.)

Step 4: With the same remote in hand press and hold unlock and lock button at same time for 2 seconds.
Step 5: Then release both at same time after 2 seconds.
Step 6: Press the unlock button after 1 second. That's it! Your car should respond by unlocking. Test it out. All my buttons worked including truck release.

For maybe a whole damn year I've suffered using my key to open everything manually. Sucked ***! I finally checked online and this this site. Hopefully my instructions will help.
Thanks for this. Worked perfect for me. Took some fettling but got there in the end. Trick is the order of button release. 2009 Outlander Elegance.

I have two keys. Both were starting to suffer in cold weather so I decided to swap the battery in the spare. I had the new battery in within seconds. Tried the spare after the battery swap and it wouldn't unlock.... I tried several guides online with 8 seconds here 8 there and they all failed.

My version was working key in ignition, turn on then off and remove.
working key - hold unlock button and count 8, whilst still holding unlock button ALSO press the lock button and count 6 then release lock first then unlock.
Non working key press both buttons at the same time and count 3, then release both at the same time, then press unlock once. This should return a lock cycle from the car.
Insert none working key and start car, jobs a goodun.

Thank you nonstop99 for getting me on the correct path; however, your step 3 is backwards. You must release the lock button, THEN the unlock button to enter programming mode for adding remotes.

The way you've written the instructions are for entering the programming mode to change how the blinkers operate when you lock/unlock the car. After reading through my own manual I spotted the error and was then able to successfully add a new remote to my car.

Some things to note:
  • Programming a key is a two part process. (key and remote)
  • You can only program a remote that is programmed to start the car
  • You CAN program a remote with only one key
  • You CANNOT program a new key with only one key
  • I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS
  • I was able to program a third OEM key using my OEM key and a third-party hardware-store programmed key (no remote) that cost me $60.

Thank you so much for this! Worked flawlessly!

I just purchased a set of keyfobs for my 2001 Montero. The instructions at the beginning of this post didn't quite work. The vehicle would go into the programing mode (chime sound and doors lock/unlock) but none of the new remote controls would actually activate during programming.
Lucky for me, the new remotes came with instructions for programing directing to go to www.programtheremote.com
That site has instructions for various years/models. Following their procedure of jumping the connectors on OBDII connector did work. The only difference was, the site says to press LOCK button 3 times, I had to do it 4-5 times on new remotes before they responded. All in all, I have two new remotes working on my Monty. I hope those who are having trouble programming their remotes will find this usefull
