Looking at 08 Outlander
Hi all,
I'm looking to replace my current vehicle, and one of the most enticing options is an 08 Outlander. I've got a few questions about them.
Firstly, how do you guys like them? I definitely like the size of it, it's slightly larger than my current SUV, and slightly more fun, if slower. The dog was very happy in the back area, and there was enough room for him to be back there with the rear seats up, and the best part was that he was trapped or happy enough back there to stay back there, though he will miss getting his head out the window as he is not tall enough to get his head out it.
The one we looked at was loaded, I think it had every option, nav, RF system (which would be getting a SIGNIFICANT upgrade), leather, HIDs, etc. Do these vehicles have automatic headlamps (ie they turn on when it gets dark automatically)? If not I'll likely just leave the headlights on as I noticed they do turn off with the vehicle turning off.
How's the real world fuel economy? I am getting a consistent 22-23mpg in my current SUV, with a decent mix of highway/city. I see they're rated for 25 highway, as was my old SUV, do people find that figure is easily beaten?
I see the HID headlights lack projectors and that there are projector kits in the works. Do the factory HIDs auto-level, and is it reasonable to expect the projector housings would also be capable of the same function?
Are the reverse lights LEDs as well as the brake lights? My sister's Lincoln MKX has this and makes it much easier to see behind you compared to the crappy incandescents I now have.
The vehicle I'm looking at is CPO, though I don't know much about what that means as far as the warranty and financing is concerned. I know most other manufacturers give 0.9-2.9% financing and a warranty extension on CPO cars, what does Mitsubishi do?
Are there any major repair and upkeep issues with these trucks? Anything in particular to watch out for?
Thank you for your help.

I have an 08 ES (4 cyl) and I can get 27-28 mpg on the highway fairly easily following the speed limit. Seats are very comfortable on long trips and reliability is rated above average by Consumer Reports. I've had no issues with my Outlander in the 27 months I've owned it.
It's interesting that you mentioned your dog being comfortable in the back, as the Outlander was named one of the best cars for dog owners (especially those who travel around showing their dogs).

Heh, he's not a show dog, more like a spoiled furry only child. That happens to be kinda stinky.
I saw mentions of a cover the replaces the 3rd row seat with a little storage pocket. This sounds perfect for what I have in mind, does anyone have any more information about this piece?
Also, do the second row seats come out as well as folding forward? If we were to go camping, being able to remove those seats would mean we could easily sleep in the car.
EDIT: More Questions.
I'm looking at an 08 with the nav/bt package, does this unit come with BT audio and USB as well? It looks like the 2010s do, but was that an update to later model year cars? Are the nav systems the different between the two years, or is it a software upgrade?
The 2010s also have a n ice leather piece over the gauges, is that compatible on the earlier years? The 08 just has this weird little plastic piece in that same location. Not a huge deal, but it might be nice to upgrade.
