Default MMC recalls 200 000 Outie+Grandis

Does anybodyknow about this recall: http://www.totalrecallinfo.com/freerecalls.php?id=8362???

Start Date: 2008-12-09 End Date: 2009-01-09

Mitsubishi Motors to recall 200,000 SUVsDecember 10, 2008
Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp said it would recall more than 200,000 sports utility vehicles worldwide due to a defective brake light system.
Japan's fourth largest automaker said it would recall 52,047 Outlander and Grandis vehicles manufactured from May 2005 to April 2008 and sold in Japan.

A further 150,000 will be recalled overseas, it said.
"When the brake light system starts not to function, the gearshift may get stuck in the parking position," Mitsubishi said in a report to the transport ministry.

Mitsubishi Motors said it would exchange the defective brake light system for a new one. No accidents have been reported due to the defect, it said.

The recall mentioned 150,000 vehicles overseas so itmay affect outties sold in North America. I will be going into the dealer next week for my 6 month service and will ask them about it then.

I called the dealer today to make the 6 month service appointment and the service advisor was not aware of the recall either. Given that this just came out on Dec 10, it may be the info has not reached the dealers yet.

I experienced this problem. It was intermittent too.

I thought my wife was making stuff up when she called me and told me she couldn't shift out of park and was stuck at some shopping plaza.

I drove my car to where she was and shifted fine.

Later that day, I had to drive the Outlander somewhere and it happened to me a couple of times.

Shift interlock is tied to the same circuit that turns on the brake lights and the whole thing is activated by a small part with a peg that sits on top of the brake pedal assembly - when you press the brake pedal, the peg is released and the circuit activates brake lights and deactivates shift interlock. Like a trigger. Wll that stupid peg/trigger part was faulty. Dealer replaced it without any problems.
