Default MMCS unit not turning off - advice needed!

Hi all,

I'm struggling with this problem. I'm fairly tech savvy and struggling to diagnose what is causing the fault. I need some ideas on things to check to get it sorted out. I have a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander Japanese import with the Rockford Fosgate system and the MMCS J03 unit. It did have the J01 but you'll see why below.

The stereo intermittently stays on once the ignition is completely turned off. Sometimes the car head unit turns off completely and is fine for 3-5 days straight then next time I drive it, it remains on-playing music etc.. once the whole car is turned off and doors are locked. Unfortunately it seems this is an intermittent problem so may be an issue trying to figure out the problem if it isn’t doing it while being checked over.

I checked the wiring harness behind the unit with the stereo out when it was causing the problem and there was still 12V power going through the accessory wire when the ignition was off so I don’t believe it is a head unit problem. The used car dealer has also replaced the head unit and the problem is still there.

We’ve been disconnecting the battery to avoid it draining power when this is happening.

I’ve pulled apart the steering column trim when this problem was happening and removed the plug for the ignition switch, the radio kept playing. I also removed the ignition switch and ran some CRC 5.56 through it in case it was sticking on some contacts internally. I tried out the switch and it seems to click positively. This was all put back together again and the problem was still there so I don’t believe the ignition switch is the problem either.

Christchurch Mitsubishi has tried rebooting the ETACS system and cleaning all the connectors for it, this didn’t work either.

Just need more ideas on what to check. I'm almost at the point of installing an in line switch in the ACC wire but really don't want to have to resort to that.

Please help! Thanks, Mark

I've fixed the problem but haven't diagnosed the actual fault. I pulled apart almost all the dash trimmings to check out the wiring. It all seemed fine, as it should be. So I'm guessing maybe this is a relay or circuit board fault. Anyway, I decided to run a new wire from the ACC wire on the ignition switch through to the MMCS accessory wire. Cutting off the factory ACC feed. It worked! Now I've bought some roof racks and am going to paint the silver trim all gloss black inside it give it a bit more class.
