Default Now that the warranty is up...

Purchased my 07 brand new in late 2006. Aside from a battery, tires, pads, rotors and fluids, here's how my Outlander has fared.

Problems while under warranty:

Wheel bearings, from the infamous "clunk," had to be replaced twice (dealer didn't fix them right the first time).

Navigation/radio FM reception is awful, causing the unit to constantly switch from mono to stereo. Dealer never fixed and problem continues...

Temperature from HVAC, specifically the heater, doesn't work properly while idling. Dealer performed the TSB to supposedly raise the idle in cold temps...problem continues.

Volume controls on steering wheel failed intermittently. I kept insisting it was the clock spring in the wheel, dealer insisted it was the switch and replaced it....problem continues.

Now that vehicle is no longer under warranty with just 58k miles:

FAST key will randomly not start the car, requiring manual starting. Battery in remote is brand new and still locks/unlocks doors when this occurs.

Bluetooth module is completely dead - unable to access any BT functions. Haven't troubleshooted yet. Not sure if it's the controls on the wheel or the module itself. In addition, press the volume "+" and the volume really goes down and vice versa.

Driver's side clunking over bumps. Investigate further and determine that the outer tie rod is bad.

In addition:

1.) Mitsubishi dealer support is awful and dealers are few and far between.
2.) Gas mileage is laughable if not on the highway (ie 6th gear) >90% of the time. I've tracked every fill up since new and I'm averaging ~15MPG (EPA "city" is 17MPG).

How is everybody else's Outlander doing?

My GT just celebrated it's 1rst birthday,11,000 miles.

No problems. Take my wife to work each morning (now that I'm retired) and on the 30 mile round trip the computer shows 25+ mph.

Real world is about 23.0 or so.

Not 1 trip to the dealer for warranty problems.

If you had these issues started while warranty in effect, they should be still be remedied under warranty. Contact Mitsubishi Customer service.

We here are on our 3rd dealer.

We are at 127k miles. The most major work done to the thing was new spark plugs and timing belt. We've had a few minor issues: blower motor died, rear wheel sensor died, rear diff output seal replaced, some wheel liner issues. Still gets just as good gas mileage as when new, tire selection is key I've found as well as using cruise control. HVAC issue is a known issue, especially in colder climates...engine doesn't make enough heat at idle to keep the HVAC hot. I'm just about ready for another oil change, so I'll send a sample in for analysis...see how it is doing.

What does the clock spring have to do with audio controls?

I find you have to drive in the city with a very light foot
With awd and close to 3900 lbs, if you put your foot as deep into the pedal as if your driving a civic
You get lower than spec mpg especially if the ac is on fully in the city, easy minus 2-3 mpg
If you can, used cruise control anything about 40 mph it has electronic throttle control and is more stable than your foot
The 2nd gen outlander makes no excuses to give weak AC or off the line torque
That's why you have to monitor the pedal and ac controls yourself if you want to get better mpg

I have just reached 3 years and 105k kms on my 2010 outlander. Do I have a lemon?
The heating system never worked properly. The vents would get stuck at one setting and wouldn't switch between vents. (Finally fixed after 2.5 years)
The "grease" incident that caused the axle to go at 20k.
Punched hole in gas tank, $1600 fix plus 10 days without car.
Spark plugs and tune up, $400.00
ECM problems, replaced. 4 weeks from japan.
Last three issues happened in the last three months. The service manager has told me that my car is now "old" and is almost miled out.
When we picked it up from the last thing, the spark plugs, we were told there was now a hole in the serpentine belt and they want to change it and do all the tensioners, for $800.
How much more should I expect? My last car, a Chrysler, went 300k before any major issues. Junk after 100k kms is killing me and making me hate the car. The car company and the people at the dealership most of all.
If I trade it in I will be taking a $5k hit but I can't afford to keep fixing this thing.

my car is 14 years old. 230 kms (140mi)
Everything in it works. And the fuel economy is about as good as you expect for a large displacement 4 cyl.

Just sayin.

2011 Outlander ES FWD with 35K miles, bought December 2011. New battery and tires this year. The only thing wrong so far is that some trim pieces have popped out. Disappearing dealerships certainly don't help. We get 25 MPG with mixed suburban driving, 29 mpg on the highway. So far, so good, though time will ultimately tell.
