The 2011 Outlander Sport was just totaled. Involved in a bad wreck off the side of road, flipped many times, jumped in air like rally car off steep drain culvert. The car is amazingly safe considering the result of no injury but shock. All airbags went off except the wheel. Probably because it was a rolling accident. The insurance wants to know the odometer miles, and I cannot access them through the usual dash LCD. Dash is smashed and wiring is badly damaged too. How do I get actual miles to give to the insurance? Can I take the ECU out, take it to someone who can run it and pull the data? I don't want to give them some number, then have them say "we found out there was more miles, you lied", and get in trouble or something for insurance fraud. I'm just not sure how to do this when you don't actually know the exact miles on the odometer and you can't see them. Surely the dealer could plug into the ECU with a uplink device to to give me the exact data? Or am I more worried than I should be? Do they (State Farm insurance) care that much on a new car less than 9 months old if the miles stated are not exact? It seems they always have some way of sticking it to you nowadays, and I just want to avoid any problems. Thanks

 

Wow, your story's scary. It's great no one was hurt. Definitely a plus for Outlander Sport.

As for the odo date, AFAIK the only place where it is stored is in the cluster. ECU does not have any information about mileage.

However, airbag controller stores many details regarding accident so mileage by the moment of the impact could be there too. Try dealer to recover the data from there.

I will try to see if getting odo reading from the cluster is possible programmatic. If so even with broken LCD but still alive internals the reading can be obtained.
