Default Outlander Fuel Mileage

I'd say you have a serious problem either with your car or the way you drive or both. I have a 2012 Outlander ES 2WD also with 4 cyl engine and I love it. The engine has plenty of power when needed but if I keep my foot out of it I consistently get 26+ mpg around town. On the highway if I set the cruise at 65 I get 32+ mpg even carrying cargo and with a/c on.

Hi Serpentor, I'm presuming you have the 2.4i petrol version too?

If so, where is the air filter and how easy is it to remove, clean and refit?

FYI, I have the 2.4i petrol version, its the 2010 model with 63,000kms, full service history and while mine appears nice and quick (unlike the original posters car), it does seem a bit thirsty, hence the air filter question. The tyres are at 2.3 which is 0.1 above recommended pressures, and normally only me in the car.....

Aaaaand, I took the air filter out, looks clean as a whistle so no need to change it.

I drove the 55kms to work this morning, 60% motorway / 40% urban, got 10.8 litres / 100km so I guess not too bad, although I did drive relatively frugally.

Will try to see what I get on a longer motorway trip.

OLD post resurrection. Apologies.
But am in the same boat as all the above.
2010 SE 2.4 CVT
NOT more than 4KM/L (9.4MPG). City/Highway not much difference. If you stomp on it, not that much happens regardless, even lower!
Maybe if there is a lot of downhill, 5.5KM/L (12.8MPG). But that is it!
Air filter changed
Oil changed
Tire pressure checked
Really don't know what to do.
It isn't that big or heavy a car to have such abysmal mileage...?

What country are you living in? What octane number has your petrol? Have you ever checked specs of the fuel you're using? In some countries (like Sweden and perhaps whole EU) there is a lot of brain washing going on regarding green/climate policy. Thus, fuel is not really a 100% fuel anymore but has a significant amount of "bio additives". As a result, the consumption (and CO2 emissions!) increases by 10-20%. How that helps environment I have no clue.
Example of average consumption for my Outlander 2013, 2.2L DiD (diesel) engine:
- diesel without additives: 6-7 L/100km
- "green brain washed" diesel with bio additives: 8-9 L/100km

NOTE1: in winter and/or heavy urban trafficking these numbers increase of course.
NOTE2: if there is any damage in your turbo charger or relevant pipes then consumption increases too. In spring this year I've got damaged intercooler pipe, the funny thing was that there was no any error codes, only increased consumption and a little black smoke when driving on a highway.

Hello
India. And it is the 2.4 MiVEC, NA inline 4 with the sensationally sluggish CVT gearbox and 4WD, always driven in 2WD mode.
We don't have that issue here, and do have fuel available from 89 to 100 octane.
I have tried them all. With no significant change except damage to my wallet.
I have checked for error codes, air filter, cat, 02 sensor, yes, I have not done an oil service in a while.

Castrol Fully synthetic Oil/Oil filter Change done.
OEM Air Filter changed
MAF Cleaned
Liqui Moly Ceratec Engine Oil Friction Reducer used
Liqui Moly and STP Injector Cleaners used
Draining 10 L of fuel (95 Octane) in 45KM (Rapid flashing of low fuel level indicator for at least 8 km)
Driving with the AirCon on and off. No perceptible difference.
Cruise Control at 60-65 KMH (1200 RPM)
2WD Only
Car empty, apart from the driver.
No knocking/pinging/stuttering/uneven idle.
Only a low grumbling/growling/"vibration-type" noise between 1000-1700RPM from the front right side of the engine bay. What could this be?

What is wrong with this thing?

Sorry for a stupid question: have you checked fuel tank and fuel lines for damages and leaks? Sometimes it leaks only when car is driven.

Not a stupid question at all.
I did have a similar issue with a CLS500 that was going through fuel like a horror movie, and it was attributed, eventually, to a fuel return line that was leaking only when the pumps were running after a bit.
I did have the Outlander up on a car lift and the lines, tank were thoroughly checked. No wet patches, drips, smell, or similar.
Am just bewildered.
I put in 20 liters of 95 octane, and the "fill me quickly", rapid blinking low fuel warning has come up...68km later! So with experience I know I have another 8-10 km at most, before it leaves me stranded.
I mean...!!
