Outlander without 4WD is not a real Outlander? Is 4WD worth $3500?
My last sedan is lancer and want to buy outlander as my second car. Got some quotas from the autopriceshare program and one of the local dealers said he could match this price. $21703 for 2015 outlander 2WD SE($3300 less than MSRP).
I felt good about this price. However, the dealer told me that the 'real outlander' should be 4WD and provide another offer: +$3500 switch from 2WD SE to 4WD GT.
To be honest, I am familiar with the outlander. Are there some big differences between 2WD and 4WD version? Should I switch to 4WD GT? Thanks

Resale value of 4wd will be better. But yea, kind of a misnomer to call a fwd car an "outlander". More like an "inlander" or "onroader", lol.
However, it really depends on your lifestyle, do you drive in the snow etc....
Did you try truecar.com??? I'm showing a 4wd outlander SE with stripped down for $23,028, that's only $1328 more, well worth the price IMO, resale value will be much higher too if you decide to sell or trade it in less than 5 years. You'll get more than $1328 back in resale value.

I just purchased a 2015 Outlander ES AWC in January...I love it. Its not the top of the line GT but it has everything I need and the 4WD is flawless. We had a really wicked January and February here in S. Ontario
and the Outlander performed great with Winter tires. I cant understand why Mitsu even offers this vehicle in FWD. The AWC system is completely automatic in 4WD eco mode and only kicks in if the front wheels lose traction. Essentially you have the fuel economy of a FWD and the traction control of a 4WD.

GT is a higher spec than the SE so hard to say, a better price comparison would be 2WD SE vs AWD SE. Not sure if SE comes with HID or reflectored lights?
Same reason as all of the other manufacturers do; some people want the SUV look but don't want to spend the extra money on the AWD, others will get pulled in by the advertised 2WD price and then figure it's not worth getting one without AWD, so end up paying more than originally planned to get the better spec.
Why do they make everything from a base spec Lancer to an Evo? 'cause some people want cheap, others want performance.
I'm unfamiliar with what the US / Canada specs are, but from a quick search it seems that, for one, the GT is a V6 rather than the 4cyl.

I suppose...but in the case of Outlander it seems the name sort of implies that the vehicle is designed with 4 WD in mind. For the price difference here in Canada...$ 1200 more...I just cant see them selling many 2 WD versions....just sayin
It depends where you are and for what purposes you want to use the car. We have a "non-real" FWD ES and are pretty happy with it. While we do get some snow in our area (mid-Atlantic), we do OK.
As far as tires are concerned, the OEM Yokohamas were pretty bad, but the replacement Firestones have held up well so far.

The gas consumption is really a non- issue for me.. I really only use full time 4WD on the worst days. That said, It's great to have it when you need it. With good winter tires the Outlander handles extremely well in nasty conditions. I like the 4WD eco mode too it really saves gas on long highway trips.
