Default Remote starter

Got 2008 xls Outlander with FAST key and was thinking about installing a remote starter. So far, I'm not sure if i should install the aftermarket or OEM. Any advice on pro and cons of either one will be appreciated.

Do you want to carry around two keyfobs or one? How much distance are you going to be from the car to start it? Did you need a two-way system that lets you know the vehicle has started or will it be within your line of sight?

I called a mitsu dealer and they quoted me $550 for the installation of OEM remote start. The biggest problem i have with their remote starter is its short range. They said its UP TO 300 feet. That seems too short a distance for me. I dont mind to carry two keyfobs if thats what going take to have aftermarket remote start with a long range.

I would hesitate with "LONG RANGE" They probably have more range from having a larger antenna, which is usually taped to the top of the windshield. But keyfobs are generally low power devices with wattage limitations set by the FCC. I know some claim 2000-3000ft, but that's really unrealistic to believe a fob can do a full half mile range, especially with such low wattage and having to go through walls, trees , bodies of water or other obstacles.

If perhaps you live on a campus, or apartment complex, or park curbside down the street, then i'm sure you want the most range possible. I think a cellular system will be more reliable for what you need. If you get a system like the compustar drone system, you can have the best of both worlds, a normal FOB, or use your smartphone to start the car or unlock doors. The subscription is $50 per year, or $120 for 3 years. If you don't pay the plan, you can still use you backup Fob to start the car.
