Replacing side mirror - HELP NEEDED
[ul][*]Hi all!
First up, let's getsomething out of the way: I am an idiot! How else can you explain breaking a side mirror while backing the car into the garage? [sm=bangbang.gif]
Nonetheless, I'm still faced with the problem of replacing it. And money is not so plentiful lately... so I'd like to order the part and replace it myself. The dealer normaly charges more for the actual installation than for the part... so that should keep my costs down a bit.
[sm=helpout.gif]And that's why I'm coming to you folks: I don't have the service manual for my Outlander (I had one for my '04 Lancer and that made a world of difference!)... so I need help from someone who knows how to do this. I suppose I have to take the inside door panel off... but even here, I'd like to be sure that I don't break anything while doing it.
Any help would be welcome... and pictures would be awesone. Service manual details would be like winning the lottery! [8D]
BTW: I am a computer technician, I've built my own house and I know a lot about cars... so I suppose I'm kinda handy. All I need is pointers so I don't ruin my car/door/paint/whatever.
Thanks in advance!Jef [/ul]

Sorry guys, I found the service manual on this very forum... [sm=nerd.gif]
Still, afterlookingat the service manual, I'm not quite sure how things are put together. But I suppose it will all make sense once I've started taking it appart.
I wonder if I'll be able to just buythe outer part of the casing or if I'll have to buy the whole mirror assembly... that would be very costly!

Hi Jef,
Not knowing how much damage was done, and wanting to do the repair yourself. Here is a link to a place that has mirror and other glass parts available: http://www.burcoinc.com/

WoRkZ, if you are going to replace all the unit:
1. Remove tweteer cover, Pull out gently the cover, and unplug the tweteer conector
2. Remove panel interior door, look here https://mitsubishiforum.com/m_131939/tm.htm
3. Remove plastic cover to access the mirror conector, unplug this conector.
4. Remove exterior mirror, unscrew 3 nuts and pull out the exterior mirror unit.
Follow the steps in sequence inverse to install the new exterior mirror.

You guys rule! Thanks for the help!
Luckily, I didn't break the mirror itself or any of the internal positionning stuff... only the black outer casing (but that broke up very nicely, with bits of it flying everywhere). The mirrorslidexactly in betweenthe door frame and the car. When it hit the lip of the frame (that makes the door waterproof), it simply wedged itself and the pressure made it shatter... not a pretty sight. Then the wife came out of the house... so I got the full treatment.
I didn't know there were companies making replacement mirrors though... so thanks for the link! That might prove helpful in the future.
This is great stuff. I figured I'd have to take the panel off... but I hadn't figured the part about the tweeter yet. My biggest fear is that I end up scratching or somehow breaking some finishing bits. Once I get to the more mechanical, I'll be okay as I'm fairly comfortable with that kind of things. But the nice finishing trims and stuff on the door have me going crazy!
