Default Roof Rack on non-side bar models (GT)?

Did a search, came up with nothing. Called Thule and was lead to their 1409 mount kit:

Thule Traverse Fit Kit 1409 - Thule Traverse Fit Kits

This is the mount type that goes into the door. Well the GT has provisions to bolt directly onto the roof as in the official Mitsubishi part(MZ314455):

Mitsubishi Outlander GT and XLS Roof Rack Kit

I think the type of roof rack that hooks into the door jam looks disgusting, and obviously it would be better to direct mount. Has anyone found a solution to bolt directly into the factory attachment points?

Anyone familiar with Thule bases and how they attach? I have access to a full machine shop so im thinking about ordering the bases and seeing what I can do.

I would just order the Mitsu. kit, but Id really like wing/aero bars.

Mitsubishi has an aerobar kit for the Outlander GT/XLS. MitsuPartsWorld even carries it.

Mitsubishi Outlander Roof Rack Kit Genuine Mitsubishi Aero bar

EDIT:

Bah. My bad. It appears to be compatible with side-bar models only.

Hmmm. I just looked at my Outie's roof rack kit (it's the same as the one you originally linked to) and there are bolts that appear to secure the crossbars to the mounting-feet.

I'm going to pull the covers off again later and see if that's what they actually do.

Exactly. There are what appears to be 4 M6 tapped holes covered by plastic pieces on the GT and XLS roof.

I cant find good information, but it appears the Yakima K509 is designed for this particular type of installation. Im not a fan of Yakima, but I may have to go that route.

At the top of each foot/tower is an Allen-head screw that causes the crossbar anchor to engage and secure the crossbar.

You'd have to contact Thule and/or Mitsubishi to be sure but it looks like you can replace the crossbars of the Outlander GT roof rack kit with Thule aerobars (Thule sells both their own complete kits and just the crossbar pairs).

The installation instructions on MitsuPartsWorld seem to back up my idea but, again, ping the makers first.

The only crappy part is that you'd have buy the Mitsubishi roof rack and the Thule aerobars separately.
