Roof Racks for Outlanders without Sidebars (GT, XLS)
 

I searched for nearly a year looking for a solution to put a roof rack on my 2013 GT. Yes, Mitsubishi does offer one:

The problem with this is I really dislike the square bars that this and the standard Thule racks use. Im also not a fan of the round Yakima bars.

So both Yakima and Thule make streamlined aluminum rack bars. Go through their fit programs and they will spit out some parts for you to get. Order these parts and you will be sorely disappointed to see that it fits in the door jam not on the points that Mitsubishi so kindly gave us.

While stumbling through some documentation I found the manual for a Thule fit kit #3093 that states it will work on a 2010+ Outlander Sport. I figured why not try it.

It came in and mounted right up. I would take this to say that any rack that fits to fixed points on a Sport will also fit on an XLS or GT. Figured I would pass this knowledge along.


Anyway, to my particular parts and install. As I said I wanted the profiled bar so I spent a little more than most would. Breaks down as follows.

Installation kit: 3093, $75.95
Towers: 460R, $170.95
53" Aerobars: ARB53, $134.95

Total with tax and free shipping: $408.59

Again, you can get cheaper if you go with square bars.

Install was straight forward. The only tools I needed that werent included was a flat head screw driver to install the lock blanks.

I did spend a little bit of time centering the bars so I figured I would post my measurements for future reference. See attached picture for where I measured.

Rear: 5.625"
Front: 5"

I think it turned out nicely, though I would like my bars black. I may pick up a can of Plasti-dip and see how they turn out.

Just a note: I do not think the next shorter size bars(47") would look good. You would have roughly 2" overhang on each side at the front which I think is too little. Try it if you want though. Use amazon and get free return shipping.

I think the aero bars work on the mitsubishi kit which is made by thule?
Either way the factory kit is cheaper as I only use the rack when needed I don't really mind which bars are on there..
Plus I have yakima bike racks they work on round and square bars and I would have needed to buy mighty mounts to use on the aero bars

Don't know what you mean, my Yakima fit just fine. I got the Whispbar Flush System with the S25 Flush and Whisbar K509 Fit Kit.

That looks really good with the Yakima.. I assume they have bolts that goes into the factory points even though they are meant for Thule?

Yeah I believe it's a universal anchor point.

Would you be able to measure the silver parts of the bars, does it look like it can fit 2 bikes on the roof? because it looks like it is almost reduced to the sunroof's width

Sure, but I probably won't be able to measure it until next week (on vacation). The metal part appears to be an inch or so wider than than the sunroof on each side. Anyway, I'm hoping it'll fit a couple bikes up there since that's also my intent.

So, I have a 2014 RVR, I ordered my rack straight from my dealer and I cannot find the mounting points. I have the side rails and they ordered my Fit Kit 3093...

I waited too long but I directly swapped out the Mitsubishi rack kit's square bar with a wing bar Evo.

The 460R is a shorter tower than the Mitsubishi kit. I tried to put the 460R on the Mitsu fit kit which bolts on but it does not work, the cover does not close. but I didn't want to buy a Outlander Sport fit kit. The Mitsubishi kit is a little nicer in my opinion, it is completely enclosed and doesn't have bare metal pieces that sit outside of the tower shell like the 460R.

I used everything else from the Mitsu kit and only upgraded the bars. I used the 50" but 53" will also work as OP shows.

There is a whistle at low speed, might be due to me cutting the strip too short, and highway speed cannot hear the bars making any noise. Much improved over the roaring of square bar.
