Default Small Fuel Tank

Hi Guys,

I'm in the market for a buying a new 4WDSUV and the Outlander isone of my top choices. The only things thatareturning me off on the Outieis the small fuel tank (15.8 gallons on the 4WD models) and the lack of a telescoping steering wheel.I'm guessing that most people areconsuming around13 gallonsbeforehaving to fill up again. A number of other compact SUVmanufacters have tanks in the 19 to 20 gallon range. I just wanted to askif the smaller 4WD tank is a pet peeve for anyone.

Kinda sucks. Its a give and take, I'll take...
FAST key, Nav, HID, headed seats, 3rd row seating (when needed), great 4wd system, blue-tooth, and decent stereo that can hold 3 gigs (#?) of mp3's over the couple of downfalls.

The FAST key, IMO, makes up for all the deficiencies of the Outtie.... I love it, especially after your friends have ridden in it more than half a dozen times and say "you mean, you dont have to use a key?"

Actually, that was my only reason for not buying an Outlander. A small fuel tank is extremely annoying if you like long drives, but I really really really have a lot of fun driving this car and you forget all about the small fuel tank when you get used to it. I can go about 550 km (city/highway combined, I own a diesel btw, don't know how much the petrol consumes) before having to find a gas station, with about 5 liters left out of a 55 liter fuel tank, which is not very comfortable if you have lots of long drives and if your previous car squeezed 800 km out of a (smaller) fuel tank. About a month after I got the Outlander I drove to the south of France (about 1300 km drive from where I live), had to fill her three times to get there (highway consumption is about the same as city when going around 150 kmph even if you use cruise control) Went to Lille last weekend and the 600 km roundtrip was about one full tank. IF you would be getting a diesel, I would recommend going for the Ralliart power pack, it will lower the consumption, but you're probably from the US and terribly afraid of diesel engines

Btw: The ultimate diesel is in Detroit right now: 500 hp, 1000 Nm @ 1750 RPM [8D]:

Kju, was just wondering, I thought all euro-outlanders had a 60 liter tank?

In regards to the fuel consumption, do you have the 2.0 or the 2.2 diesel?

On the smallish fuel tank, I agree that it is a bit annoying, but atleast the outlander has a 10 liter larger fuel tank than my '04 lancer SW sport, which burned fuel at the same rate, so for me the outie is an improvement, but I would have loved an additional 10-20 liter fuel capacity.

Well since Dufman is talking in gallons rather than liters, I would assume he is located in the US. Diesel models are not available in the states, just gasoline. And nothing against diesel, but IF we are afraid of dieselits becausein the US diesel fuel is a good 15% more expensive than gasoline right now...

Also to comment on mileage, with the 4wd models you will get a good 300 miles easy out of a tank doingCITY driving and still have a gallon or so left (about 20mpg city). When you use a tank for 90% or more for HIGHWAY driving your going to get a good 350-400 miles out of the tank (about 23-27mpg highway). That is what I have experienced anyways.

There are gas stations everywhere so why are you guys concerned? Bigger tank (full) would mean heavier vehicle, which means less fuel efficiency.

On another hand, the Outlander's fuel tank capacity is in line with the main competitors in the segment - RAV4, CRV, Rogue. They all have 60L tanks (the CRV has 58L).
Sure, a Suburban fuel tankis much bigger, but ...... no need to compare.

I actually had the dealer call Mitsubishi NL when I brought the car for the first service, because I believed the tank was smaller than the factory stated, so they called Mitsubishi NL who confirmed that my car has a 55 liter tank and the fuel light comes on with about 5 liters left in the tank.
I was just kidding about the diesel fright
I have the standard 2.0 volkswagen diesel with the ralliart power pack. Fuel consumption decreases with 10%, the engine makes less noise, shifting to a higher gear at a much higher speed.
@ dodo2: you're absolutely right!

Exactly. I don't want to be carrying around extra kgs of fuel as an added load when driving around town. Long drives are an occasional thing for me, and I guess its also true for the majority of Outlander owners. And the fact that in our area there's about a gas station every 10 miles, running empty is the least of my worries. I say the fuel tank in my 4WD Outlander is just about right.

On the Canadian Outlanders, the light comes on when there are 10L left in the tank.
