Default Towing with CVT

Does anyone have experience of towing with the 2.4 / CVT combination with / without a transmission oil cooler? I notice that Mitsubishi quote a much lower towing weight in the USA than in Europe.

I have a 2009 2.4 with CVT and tow a caravan which weighs 1400kg. The Outlander is fitted with a transmission oil cooler as standard. It tows great and is a very capable tow vehicle. Max towing weight is 1500kg. I have fitted rear airbags and have LPG as well. I am in Australia.

I'm pretty sure the US Spec towing capacity is only 1500 lbs, not kg. Not sure why there would be such a big difference, but I definitely thought that number was pretty low when I first heard it.

It has been discussed in this forum previously and I think you will find it is 1500kg (3300lbs) for the 2.4lt and 1600kg (3500lbs) for the 3lt. The body is basically the same except the reverse to ours so it should have the same capacitys. Maybe the tow hitch is a lower rated one. Mine is the Mitsubishi supplied 8 bolt bar.

The towing capacity is 1500lbs for 2.4 2WD/4WD, 2000lbs for 3L 2WD and 3500lb for 3L 4WD in Canadian owners manual. Those are all with trailer brakes.

That sucks. Here' thats the capacity for an unbraked trailer.
A mini has that towing capacity. Maybe its a typing error in the manual or in the translation. Contact Mitsubishi.

Thanks to all for your input. The difference between UK & USA towing weights does not just apply to Mitsubishi. In the UK it is normally based on 85% of the tow vehicle weight. In the USA I do not know how it is calculated, but all the labels and driver's manual state 1500 lbs. When the gasoline CVT was sold in the UK it was definitely 1500 kgs. You can no longer check this on the UK web site as the only outlanders now sold there are diesel powered. Wish I could get one of those here!

It probably has to do with the landscape. For example, I wouldn't tow anything with the Outlander through the mountains here, it would be way too risky due to winding roads and very steep grades. I would trust the brakes on long downhill parts unless they were upgraded, as they fade really fast.
However, to local lakes and stuff I would feel comfortable towing a boat, because its all flat.

Here in Australia I have towed a 1400kg van through very windy and steep roads for hours on end and have had no problems at all. The van has electric brakes not the hydraulic overide type some vans still have which can be dangerous.
The electric brakes come on slightly before the towing vehicle brakes and you have full control. Of all the towing vehicles and vans I have had over the years this is by far the best.

Hi and hope you are still on the forum ... I have a poptop van GVM 1200, TAFE 1100, ATM 1400 which I have been towing with a 2.7 Hilux twin cab. We recently got a 2009 180KM Outlander with CVT towing capacity 1500KG. We are in SA and will be towing on the flat and are considering using the Outlander for a change and it is a very comfortable car compared to the 'truck'.I would appreciate any further comments, It is a 2.4 CVT.
