Hey everyone!
I'm new to the forums and wanted to pop my head in.
I currently own a 2002 Eclipse GT. It's my first real car (my last car was a 94 Chevy Blazer that my dad basically let me use until I saved up enough for my own car). I bought it more for the looks, as I really have always liked the design of the Eclipse and the pretty cool things you can do to make it look nice.
I am a soldier in the US Army, and I just came back from Iraq recently. I have some money saved up (even though most of my money went to investments and paying off debt). I am in great standing with my current bank, and I have been debating on making a purchase.
I really like the Evolution X, and a newer 08 model is definitely in my price range. I'm looking to spend no more than $40k on a vehicle right now. I may or may not sell my Eclipse. I like it as a day-to-day driving car and I've done some things (mostly vanity and sound system stuff) to make it a pleasurable ride. I am looking at getting a car I can tweak and work on and possibly race in the Nurnburg circuit in Germany since I am stationed there (I have some friends who race there and say it's a blast).
Can anyone make some suggestions for a car up to $40k (preferably newer for that much)? I have been looking at the Supra (94, 95), the Evo X, the WRX STi, just to name a few. I'm not afraid to spend more money over time and throw some wrenches around to get this car into shape. I'm a single guy in the military, so my money is my money, and getting married isn't in my future until I'm out of the Army. I couldn't deal with being away from my family for so long like that!
Thanks for any input! I can't wait to learn more and get settled in the forums!

I toyed around with the STI, used Porshe Boxter, Evo X, G37, BMW 135 or 3 series, but came back to the Evo X. It has been a sweet car. You don't get the looks I used to get on my BMW or RX8, but those who know what it is always praise it. I think it handles great, great power stock, AWD and has 4 doors, so some practicality. I drove the STI but I did not prefer its looks or test drive. Have had my Evo X for 1600 miles and can't regret them. I also like the fact that it is a little more low kney than the ones mentioned above (even with the large wing). Brand and ownership costs are not as high... IMHO.

what you might want to try is grab yourself a rally lancer, as opposed to the evo. and then turn it into a project car. the evo comes with so much stuff already done (and at my dealership almost everyone who has purchased the evo, has traded it back in for the rally edition lancer) i currently own a 2008 outlander, but i just traded in my 2008 lancer and that was a fun car to drive. i guess the downside to buying a newer car as opposed to the 90's supras and such, is that so much on these cars is now computer controlled that you have to be part mechanic part techie to handle a lot of the add ons and fixes you might want to tackle.
i loved my lancer, it is a great little car, has a great sporty feel. never did try the evo but from what i hear around here, the evo x is not going over very well. it seems like it is just too much damn money, and you cant use the car for what is was built to do.
however you do mention taking it onto some tracks. that might mean that you can play with it a lot more. that is something that you are going to have to weigh out.
anyway just thought id throw a few idead out there for you. hope you are happy with whatever you decide to go for.
