Default honda man crosses over

hi everyone i bought a 98 gs a month ago and im having some trouble out of it, i am a former honda man so maybe this will sound stupid to some of you but, when i start my car the idle lopes from about 300 to 1500 rpm only for maybe a minute, during this time if you step on the gas you see smoke but when this temper tantrum is over the smoke stopes and you can drive it anywhere untill you stop at a stop light, then it revs at about two grand and slowly goes back down...im starting to get pissed so any info would be great....i really dont want to buy another honda

test your alternator.. check the starter.. fuel is getting there cause it DOES start, so its not that.. its something electrical. maybe there's a short somewhere.. bad ECU? not sure.. try that and see whats up
