Default Mid-life crisis :-)

I'm in the market for a 97-99 Eclipse Spyder. Honestly I'm not knowledgable enough with Mistsu's to know if they are all convertiables or not, but that's what I'm after. Body wise I'm finding plenty that are in good shape but they mostly have 100K to 150K miles on them. What kind of things, mechanically, should I be on the look out for with the Eclipse? I'm expecting things like, replacing timeing belts, breaks, suspension, U and Ball joints etc. What kind of unique things happen with Eclipses? Thanks for any assistance.

well that all depends on whether you are looking for a GS, or a GST. The difference is this

GS - 2.4L 4g64 engine non-turbo
GST - 2.0L 4g63 engine turbo

Your gonna find it hard to find a car with under 100k miles on it that is over 10 years old.

The 'Spyder' part means convertable.

As TE said, you have two options there. Are you specifically looking for a soft top?

Here are the models in order of desireability:

GSX - All wheel drive and turbo (2.0L 4G63 Engine)
GST - Front wheel drive and turbo (2.0L 4G63 Engine)
GST Spyder - Front wheel drive, turbo, and convertable (2.0L 4G63 Engine)
GS Spyder - Front wheel drive, non turbo, and convertable (2.4L 4G64 Engine)
GS - Front wheel drive and non turbo (2.0L 420a) The engine in this one is so underpowered.
RS - Front wheel drive and non turbo (2.0L 420a) The engine in this one is so underpowered.

The 420a is a little more reliable than the 4G63, but it is non turbo and is SLOW. This is the same engine that was put in the older Neon's... ew Chrysler. I rather have a car that requires some attention every now and then but still puts a smile on my face...rather than something I just hate. The 4G64 is probably the most reliable of the bunch, but again is non turbo and a little underpowered.

Choice is yours!

Personally I recomend the GSX. All wheel drive, turbo.....yummy goodness.

Honestly if I could I'd get a Lotus Elise.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. My current ride is a VW Passat AWD 1.8LT. Fun car to drive for a daily driver and family roadster. I'd love to get a G4 but I'm looking to pay out right for G2 and ditch the VW so I can be payment free. And I've got a son who will be going to to college in a year and a half.

This time out I get to have the "fun" car. I'm handy enough in the garage to be able to quite a few things to the car and I'm looking forward to modding what ever it is I end up with. This car will be my daily driver and I have a 104 mile round trip to work every day, mostly highway, so I'll be adding miles quickly.

I found a 3000 GT in white that I hope to test drive this weekend. I'm trying to make the most of the midlife melt down.

I'm really loving the AWD of the VW and would like to find GSX but I'm fine with FWD. I'm use to paying for the "good stuff" at the pump due to turbo, but wouldn't mind getting a way from it. Mileage isn't much of an issue, I've seen from 86K to 150K on cars in the range I'm looking at. I might have this car for 2 or 3 years, or 10.

So much food for thought.

Midlife crisis = buy one of the following IMO. Supra, vette, TA, Viper, SS maro.

I havea funny feeling that mine will be a GTS Viper someday. I have a soft spot for them almost as bad as I do for supra's

Why not get an Elise then? They are going for 25k+ on the used market. Just recently there was one with 25k on it that went for only 25k. Was pretty nice too.
