Default noob w/ ?s

Hola!

Well just got my first car and its a 2000 Eclipse GT. My Grandfather gave it to me for my 18th and neglected to tell me its pretty messed up. Only thing not stock is an AEM intake which is nice.
The thing overheats within a mile of drivetime and needs to be serviced but I dont want to pay the price quoted by the shops so my dad and I are overhaulin the motor.
Im changing the water pump, Timing Belt, plugs/wires/ and coils. Im tight on a budget but does anyone have any suggestions for mods while I have the engine open. I want bang for my buck but dont want to get ripped off.

Also....112,000 miles so.....if that helps...thanks in advance.

The only way to make real power with those would be a turbo kit and thats like 3000+. Anything else would bea waste of money
