Question Sad to let her go

My wife's 2002 Montero Sport, 4wd 3.0 ES, 122,000 miles, turned up with the crankshaft pulley bolt sheared off, leaving part of it in the crankshaft. My mechanic advises a used or rebuilt engine (not a service he provides). Though we love the overall sturdiness of the car and its surefootedness in snow, I am inclined to let it go rather than sink about 3k into it. Advice?

$3K for pulling broken bolt out of crankshaft? Wow.
Unless the engine is really damaged like valve rods are bent etc.
