Default turbo kit - automatic transmission ?

Is it a bad idea to put a turbo kit into a car with stock automatic transmission? --As in my car, 97 Eclipse with a 420a engine. I don't know much in the turbo world, so treat me like a noob. lol

Yep. A automatic transmission isnt going to hold up to the extra power. It wasnt made for it.

Yeah, I mean, there are GST and GSX autos, but... would the transmission on a 420a NON-turbo be able to handle a turbo situation... the RS/GS might have the same transmission as the GST/GSX.. I dunno! I just dont know these things. I DON'T KNOW MAN!

Are you sure sebba? An automatic transmission that wasnt meant to hold more than 150 horsepower is going to be up to the task of holding all that extra power without modification? It may work, but I dont see it lasting too long. I may not be an expert, but I do have some common sense. I'm just trying to say its not a good idea. But I could be wrong. Try it. See what happens. Then you'll know.

However, a better way to go about reaching your goal is to save that 3-4 grand you would of spent on that turbo kit, sell your RS, and buy a GST or GSX and enjoy not worrying about your transmission blowing up. I think Sebba can agree with me on that one.

I'd love to get a GST or GSX.. if I could find one! No one has one around here that I can find. They're all hundreds and hundreds of miles away from me. I want one, but I'm not going to take a road trip across the country for one. lol

I dont think you will be able to get enough hp out of it to worry about it.. Because with the stock motor your gonna be under 10lbs of boost and it wont be a rediculous amount of hp.. That tranny should be able to hold quite a bit.. I know the turbo trannys are tough tranny's..

I'll probably pass on the turbo idea. lol.

And I read somewhere that some turbo kits at 8-10 psi could give a 420a almost 100hp gain/ 60% increase. That BS or something?

I looked into it when I had my GS a couple years ago, and I got all excited about the hp gains, but then I found out you should only be running about 7psi if you want to run it safely on your stock motor... You could see that much hp gain with the right set up, but for the majority I would say no... 420a might know more about those kits tho...
