Back from Ohio
So I took a trip from VA to Ohio a couple weeks ago. I have been putting off posting about it just cuz I'm lazy.
So I drove the '72 Super Beetle up. Normally a 10 hour trip took me 17 hours. Mostly because I kept stopping at stores to wander around and allow the car to cool a bit. Going through the foothills in WV and MD was a pain though. Downhill I was topping 90 MPH going uphill 45 MPH... I think I had a Semi pass me uphill once...
Got there and visited with family ran around the area seeing all that had changed and visited a guy I was friends with WAY back when I was like 6. Well after BSin with him for a while I went to leave and as I'm sitting at a light I see a yellow Beetle in a driveway on the other side of the street. I rev the engine (The Super beetle has a glasspack so it has a bit of a sound to it) and the 2 guys that were in the yard look over and one of them runs towards the curb and starts waving me over. I figure hell why not right? Pull in and bs with the guy for an hour or so. turns out he won his bug on e-Bay from a guy in Indiana for $1200.
After leaving his place I stopped at Rite Aid due to a bee sting and needing benedryl. Standing in the checkoutline a kid comes through the door into the store with his dad. I hear the dad say "Well stand out there and wait for him maybe he'll show you". The kid says "The engine isn't REALLY in the back is it?". Dad again said "Well go wait for him. You'll see". I just looked in the guys direction and said "It's mine". So I finish paying for everything and go out to the bug and show the kids the engine and let the dad take a look around. It was almost like I brought the candy store to the kid with how the dad was talking about his grandmother owning one and whatnot.
Another nice long trip home that was fairly uneventful though took I believe another 18-20 hours to drive home. Partially because I took a little detour into Pittsburg walked around a bit and then got lost trying to find my way out (The GPS wasn't getting a signal for crap with all those buildings everywhere either).
Now a few weeks down the line and I got to thinking about it... Knock it if you want but I own a bug and I love it. Sit down a sec and ponder these thoughts: What car out there do you know that is 100% recognized around the world? Think about your car. How many places will you be able to go and have people look at your car and say "HEY is that a ****???"? People don't even have to ask what mine is only what year it is. How many cars out there get the looks that a bug does? Even a beat up rusted dented old bug gets looks. What car have you ever owned that could bring a smile or a laugh to kids faces when they see it? What cars do you know of that bring a look of awe to some adults faces when they see it (Mostly because they're thinking "That thing is still RUNNING?!?!"?
I'll tell you this much, if there were a list of must own cars, an old beetle would definately be on that list somewhere if not near the top. My little bug may leak oil (don't they all?), the radio may not be totally secured (Mostly due to me waiting until I get a new radio before I really put it in right), the speakers may sit on the floorboard on the passenger's side, a runningboard may be missing and it may have various rust spots and primer spots but there's nothing I'd trade this little bug for and selling her is out of the question. She's been a faithfull daily driver for more than 3 months now and hasn't let me down once yet. Besides for only $400 I think it was a steal to get her for that low a price. Even with the minor problems she had.
I need to take a new pic since I've added a few things and made her a little prettier since this was taken.
