Car Salesman!
I am just curious to see if there are any car salesman on the forum. i am currently maybe thinking about getting a job as one. I would like to know the good and the bad about it....and how difficult it really is?
I'm a sales consultant
(I hate the term "salesman" so don't refer to me as that please)...I also do Finance and Insurance (F&I) here at my dealership...I'm Ford and Mercury certified, only 3 tests away from being master certified...I love my job! And I'm very good at it...It's a great job and I've been doing it for 2 1/2 years now..Don't listen to Tidus about the hourly thing...It is a tough job, you work long hours (I work between 50 and 60 hours per week), the pay is what you make it to be..The sky is the limit in sales..It is a "commission only" job so you have to be aggressive so if you are laid back or too easygoing or shy then this job's not for you...you gotta go after it...I'm usually the top guy at my store each month so I get paid well...Depending on the dealership, you only get paid hourly if you don't sell **** that month...Trust me, you don't want to get "paid hourly" in sales cuz then you only get paid the minimum wage and be in danger of losing your job because you haven't been selling..This job does have its good months and bad months and can be stressful..You can't let anything get toya or take anything to heart in this business...I work for a great auto organization, we have about 12 stores total with 3 of them being in my immediate area and I obviously work at our Ford and Mercury store...I like it but I also have the drive and personality for it...If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask me.

shreff99,
that is exactly the kind of answer i was looking for. I just have a ton of people telling me i could do it and im still unsure if i could. I know alot about the cars on the lot already so thats kinda helpful, i would just need to pick up the tricks of selling. The manager said it isnt hard to do, and he said that the other guys usually make at least 3 grand a month on commission. The money is the reason i want to do it, seems like it can be neverending if you keep being aggressive. I think i just might give it a try and see how it goes , im only 21 so i can take some chances now why im younger.

You can't be too overly aggressive or cocky cuz you'll push the customer into a defensive mode or just drive them away..When working a deal, remember to always overcome the customer's objectives..and don't ask for the sale right off the bat, you gotta earn it...You gotta have some ***** too...It takes a lot of time and experience to learn all the tricks of the trade and you have to be able to learn to read people well cuz customer's will like to bull**** ya..The one thing I hate about this job is that you get stereotyped as a criminal all the time which I am far from that because I am very upfront and honest with my customers but don't let that type of stuff get to ya...you should make at least 3 grand a month in this business or you don't need to be in the business at all..I do well and make like 50ish a year. Good luck to ya and have fun with it.
