Default GST Trade in value

I took my car to a dealership, and they only want to give me $2500 for my car. I checked Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds, and the prices range from $3175 to $4000. The car needs brakes and tires, thats why they say thetrade in price is so low.And itis having a problem with the tranny, but they don't know about that because the car drives fine for about 15 mins before it starts grinding and gets hard to shift. They only drove it for 5 minutes.

I've been trying to sell it locally for cheap, but once I start talking about what it needs, people run the other way or lose intrest really quickly, and I am absolutly done putting money into this car.

Its a difficult situation because I can't drive the car far so I'm stuck with only local dealerships. Right now I'm driving around my very first vehicle that I held on to, a 1993 GMC Sierra w/ 170,000 miles on it, with no power and gets 9mpg. I drive 50 miles a day at least, which costs me around $20 a day/$140 a week to get to work and back, not including going places after work.

Anyways, I've never dealt with a car salesman before, so my question is, how would you go about talking up the trade in price? I'm aiming forat least$3175.

Trade in values are always going to be lower than the person to person value.
My RS was appraised at $3,850... and I owe $4,200. Would still be in debt on the trade.
So what I am doing with mine is keeping the miles down (only has 55,300 right now) and making it look attractive to a youth market, then selling it for around 6-7k.
Being in a college town, and a rich college town, theres someone that will pay that.
A friend of mine sold his 2000 Camry and all it had was 18"s and 125k for $6,600.

Yeah I know, it sucks doesn't it. I wasn't expecting a high number or anything, like $5000 or $6000, I was praying for $4000, but was expecting $3000, and they offer $2500. Dammit.

I had a 99 GS with 60,000 miles on it.. They wanted to give me 2,000 for it.. This was about 3 years ago, so the car wasnt that old at all... I told them where to go and went to another dealer and got $6,000 for it.. Its all a numbers game.. But you should try to fix that if your gonna sell it.. If you do it would be easier to get rid of to a person instead of a stealership..

obviously the car is worth more than 2500, they know that. Thats why they are only offering that, because what good is it to them if they dont make any profit on it
