I know someone who's had a turbo VW for a whil enow and hasn't any problems with it. He has a few mods on it, not sure as to how deep he went with messing with the engine but I haven't heard any complaints or problems from him.

is he running aftermarket stuff? cause from my expierences vdubs are very reliable stock cars...
the only jetta's ive heard of being reliable are the 2.0's, and they are slow lol, dont expect too much performance from them unless you are gonna go drastic (as in boosting it) and then it will most likely loose its reliability

Yeah I don't know who got the idea that they are reliable. I had a friend with a 95 2.0 and his broke down almost every 3 months. One time he was having electrical issues and smoke came out of the instrument cluster. The turbos and V6's are especially unreliable. They are one of the most unreliable cars of all time. Just look at consumer report

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/c...%20cars%201998

If you look at other reports too it is almost always on the most unreliable list. Combined with really expensive parts, I would not reccomend it.

Haha didn't think they'd be that bad - Stay away from mods then if your going to go with it, just increases the risk/chance

whats your definition of 'fast'? yes, the 2.0's are probably a little faster because they are lighter then the eclipse. if the 420a defines your standard of fast, you got some issues to sort out

no no no i dont think the 420a is fast. if a jetta is slower than this then there is no way i am getting one haha. im never getting a car slower than this haha.

This is my first car so i havent even expierenced fast yet and i want to and i know i prolly wont if i get a jetta but i like them. Plus i see alot more jettas and golfs around than dsms, so they would be easier to get ahold of.

but dont think im getting rid of my dsm cuz im in love even if it is just a 420a haha
