This may seem strange...
Displacement. As long as the boat displaces enough to give it a positive bouyancy then it won't sink. Just like the big steel tankers. You'd think HEY would sink the amount they weigh.

My friend is studdying civil engineering at rowan university and every year the engineering majors have a contest, its a concreat cano race across a lake. Its funny as hell becse some of them do crack and its great seeing people just drop into the water.
well the races have to have four people in it at once and the total thickness of our canoe is 3/4". It doesnt seem like much but we used a double reinforcing system with i fiberglass mesh and a plastic mesh. So hopefully ours shouldnt crack. It should be interesting though. I get to be one of the lucky ones to be in the boat so hopefully it doesnt crack
That's EXACTLY why I WILL laugh. LOL Damn you gotta get a vid of the race too!! lol It'l be GREAT (And if it never appears we'll know you went for a swim that day LOL)
