The switch can definitely go bad for just one direction, each direction has its own contact inside and that is most likely your problem. Very cheap and easy to replace, it either pops out by hand or...

Nice job. So you were able to fo the job without pulling the engine? Is this a 2WD Montero Sport? Don't think you can do this on the full size Monty without removing front suspension subframe.
