Default 1989 Raider 3.0 with air flow sensor issues

Hi, relatively new to owning a Raider and reaching out to see if anybody has had issues with the air flow sensor. When plugged in it runs terrible and shimmy and shakes with exhaust smelling very rich in fuel. When unplugged it runs 95% better but at idle it oscillates some and not running quite as smooth as it should. Cleaned sensors within the airflow sensor(AFS) which did nothing. I also tried another used one but no change. What is strange is no check engine light has been flagged.
