Does the AC Compressor require Freon to turn on?

Does the AC Compressor require Freon to turn on?

Does the AC Compressor require the proper ammount of Freon to turn on? I only have about 1/3 of the proper ammount of freon in. its a 93 with an r12 system im putting freeze 12 in it...

it needs the right amout of freon to make the low and high pressure switches to work ...................so yes it needs freon

it needs freon to be cold air but you should still hear it kick in when you turn it on.

Yes, it should attempt to kick the clutch over.
