There will be NO warning when the belt goes. The only reason you'll know the timing belt snapped is the engine stops running suddenly. Yeah the timing belt will likely last a bit longer but I'd start looking at trying to find a part time job like now. You will want to replace the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and balance shaft belt all at once (Save yourself the trouble of having one of those items self destruct after you replace the belt and then force you into tearing it all down again to redo everything). And like racerx said at least you're not in his or my position. I have a different engine than you so my parts are more expensive when I do that stuff (I have chains for timing and balance shafts not belts like you). I've put over $600 in parts in my car thus far and will be putting another $200 in before it's driveable again. (I also have to replace gaskets when I do timing instead of just the belts as I have to remove the oil pan AND valve cover to do my timing chain).

i'd just take the top cover off, it comes off easy, look at the belt or even take a closeup clear pic of it and post it, ive had timing belts last 150,000 miles or more, and some let go before 60,000, it just depends on how badly the engine was abused
its not like its gonna break tomorrow, if you just drive it, it'llprobly be fine, if you beat the hell out of it, you take alot higher chance of an old belt letting go, check it out, maybe its been replaced already

FYI my DOHC neon got a whole season of racing on the original timing belt with 85,000 miles on it & it survived running from 4500 up to the rev limiter twice a lap all season.plus all the dirt. its a different engine and not as hard on belts as the 4g63 but its the point that my belt didnt look bad at all -it was for sure original, and it lasted

That's what I'm saying. If the car wasn't beat to the ground and pissed on by the previous owner and he babies it and drives easy then the t belt will likely last for a bit longer. But it needs checked plain and simple. Before it IS too late.

actually that one looke like it has some miles on it,but it doesnt look cracked up in the picture- mark the belt, then turn the engine over and look all over it for cracks, dry rot or frays, if theres none of that you should be ok for a while yet

just went and did that it all looks ok, i mean the car will never be raced or anything i built a truck to do that in this car is just to get 20MPG and not 9MPG like i get in my truck so this should last me till i get the money to do a turbo swap in a year or 2
